I don’t mind telling you, it’s awesome to have a toy that immortalizes that time the dad from Malcolm In The Middle got terminal cancer and decided to start cooking and selling crystal meth with one of his former students so that he could provide for his family after he was gone. Who knew he’d become the most dangerous drug kingpin in the Southwestern U.S.? Continue reading
A Look Ahead: The Movies of 2016
As far as cinema is concerned, 2016 will be The Year of the Nerd. The Marvel and DC Comics universes will be heavy hitters, an Independence Day sequel nearly twenty years in the making will hit theaters, the long-awaited and debated female-fronted Ghostbusters film will arrive, and we’ll also see another appearance by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this look into next year’s movie schedule, I’ll offer brief discussions of eight movies that I cannot wait to see, and I’m sure I’m in good company. Continue reading
Marvel Collector Corps, June 2015- Ant-Man
This second edition of the world’s greatest nerd box from Marvel and Funko is centered around the movie studio’s newest release, Ant-Man, starring my personal hero and the man who I’d want to play me in a movie, Paul Rudd, as well as Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, T.I., and rising star Corey Stoll (of the wildly successful Netflix series House of Cards). This box contained Funko’s unmasked Ant-Man Pop! doll, along with the shrunken version which is the company’s smallest vinyl collectible. Along with that, there were two bobbleheads, including another unmasked Ant-Man, and Yellowjacket, the movie’s villain. Continue reading
The 21-Day Fix: Week 1 Update
The first week of the 21-Day Fix has been interesting, to say the least. There are aspects of the diet plan that are not as bad as I thought they were going to be, but in other ways, it’s a trial of willpower that I’m not quite used to. I won’t be providing a daily journal here, as that would be tedious for me and likely boring for you, but I’ll give you an overall view of what I’ve gone through so far. There were some struggles (all of which were mental), some success, and some surprisingly good meals (some of which I’ll describe and provide pictures for). Perhaps the hardest part for me so far has been satisfying my raging sweet tooth, which I’ve had to do with fruit alone thus far. One of my favorite things in the world is gummies of all sorts, and up to this point, a bag of them came to work with me several times a week to get me through the day. Continue reading
The Beer List: Fat Tire
I first tried this beer in the fall of 2014, after much hype and anticipation. Its brewer, the Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing, has no distribution in New Jersey as of yet, so you can’t really get it here. A friend of a friend brought a case from Somewhere, USA, and I was graced with a bottle. It certainly lived up to all the talk I had heard about it from a few of my beer-loving friends. Fat Tire is an amber ale, which is more than pleasant enough to be a great go-to. Continue reading
A Very Late-To-The-Party Review: Dollar Shave Club
Just about everyone has to shave hair off of some part of their body, and do so regularly enough, I’m sure, to have realized that razor cartridges are one of the most inexplicably expensive products on the face of the Earth. I don’t know if companies that make shaving products are digging down to Middle Earth to find the metal for their razor blades, or if they’re extracting it from the bones of some mythical creature, but something is amiss when supermarkets have to lock up razor cartridges in those infuriating plastic lock boxes that seem to baffle cashiers at the register no matter where you go. If the good shavers of the world are resorting to theft of these insanely overpriced necessities, or are at least thinking about it, then something in the industry has to change, and someone has to lead the charge. Continue reading
Funko Friday: Egon Spengler
Welcome to the first post of what will be an ongoing series involving my favorite new toy company, Funko. The toy maker is known for its line of vinyl Pop! dolls, which now exist for just about every movie and television show ever (except for Indiana Jones, much to the chagrin of my friend and toy consultant Jack), with more properties being released all the time. Each week, I will post a picture of one of the many in my collection, with a blurb, quotes, a story or some other bit of information about these fun, highly collectible (and affordable) toys. Continue reading
Marvel Collector Corps, April 2015- Avengers: Age of Ultron
In April of this year, Marvel, in conjunction with the toy company Funko, launched Marvel Collector Corps, which is a bi-monthly subscription-based nerd box of epic proportions. Each box comes complete with at least one of Funko’s popular Pop! vinyl dolls, other collectibles, a t-shirt, a comic (so far), and a collector’s pin and patch. Everything found in the box is 100% exclusive to it- you can’t get it anywhere else! Continue reading
Ryan Remembers…The Ref
The Ref is one of the best comedies you’ve never seen. Released in 1994, this thoroughly hilarious, dark Christmas movie stars Denis Leary as Gus, a typically successful cat burglar, who after a botched robbery is forced to kidnap a couple and hide out at their home in an affluent Connecticut suburb to avoid the police. Thinking he’ll be moving along quickly, once his alcoholic schlub of a partner secures transportation to get them beyond the police dragnet, he gets more than he bargained for when he realizes that he kidnapped the family from hell. Lloyd and Caroline Chasseur, played to perfection by Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis, respectively, are a married couple on the verge of divorce who drive Gus insane with their incessant bickering throughout their captivity on the night of Christmas Eve. Continue reading
The 21-Day Fix: Getting Started
As of yesterday, Jenn and I embarked on a diet plan called The 21-Day Fix, in conjunction with the well-known Shakeology program. Founded upon the concepts of clean eating and portion control, the three-week program includes flavored shakes that are packed with essential nutrients, an extensive cookbook full of seemingly delicious meals, and exercise DVDs. To make portion control easy, the subscription kit comes with a collection of color-coded containers for the rationing of your daily allowances of proteins, fruits, vegetables, starches, and healthy fats. Based on your starting weight, you’ll be assigned a daily calorie intake, which corresponds to a certain number of each type of container. All of the food you eat has to fit neatly within each container, and the recipes are specially designed to ensure this. Continue reading
