In honor of the upcoming return of The Walking Dead, this week’s edition of Funko Friday presents the Prison Yard Rick Grimes Pop! doll! Everybody who has watched the show from the beginning remembers when Rick and the crew were just about to stumble upon the prison, as the fearless leader ushered in “the Ricktatorship” with his “this is not a democracy anymore” speech. From there, he grew his hair out, became a farmer, and completely lost his shit and started hallucinating and seeing his dead wife (man, she was annoying when she was alive). It was a weird time for Rick on the show, as he quickly descended from awesomeness (see: Ricktatorship) to a quivering, emotional pile of goo incapable of leading anyone. Continue reading
Essential Power Ballads, Vol. 6
Another five emotional rock ballads are being served up to you this week, with more coming next Tuesday!
Bon Jovi– “Never Say Goodbye”
A power ballad list would never be complete without New Jersey’s favorite prom song (it even references the prom) from Bon Jovi’s breakthrough record, Slippery When Wet. The song’s musical structure is emotionally gripping, and its lyrics pine for days gone by, youthful hijinx, and the retention of those memories. This is one of those songs that makes me miss when Bon Jovi was great, as well as those relatively carefree days of my own youth. Continue reading
The Beer List: Sam Adams Pumpkin Batch
As far as I’m concerned, Sam Adams can really do no wrong. While a couple of their standards are not necessarily anything to write home about, I can’t say I’ve ever disliked one of their brews. The Boston-based brewery has the seasonal beer thing down to a science, releasing delightful variety packs for each time of year. Continue reading
Funko Friday: TMNT Raphael
The newest edition of Funko Friday delves into one of my favorite properties as a kid, and still today, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The foursome of mutated, crime-fighting turtles has stood the test of time, having been depicted in comic books, several cartoon series, two movie franchises (one of which is still in the works), and tons of great action figures. The four baby turtles were accidentally mutated by an ooze, raised and taught the ways of the ninja by a mutated rat in the sewers, developed an uncompromising love of pizza, and battled the Foot Clan, the Shredder and many other villains on the streets of New York. Continue reading
The Google Effect
In Nicholas Carr’s 2008 article for The Atlantic titled “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” he presents the argument that the meteoric rise of the Internet has sapped the collective attention span of the human race, negatively impacting the way people find and ingest information, as well as how deeply they engage with their chosen material. While the title of the article is an oversimplification, Carr quite effectively posits that the overwhelming availability of information provided to the world by the Web strains one’s ability to concentrate on any one piece for too long. He relates the decline of his own attention span when it comes to reading, stating that he used to “spend hours strolling through long stretches of prose,” but now finds that his “concentration starts to drift after two or three pages.” Continue reading
Essential Power Ballads, Vol. 5
Volume 5 of this continuing series on the tear-jerking rock songs you need in your life is here!
Aerosmith– “Angel”
Kicking off with a cascade of sound from the legendary Joe Perry’s guitar and Joey Kramer on the drums, this huge hit from Aerosmith’s 1987 album Permanent Vacation features impassioned vocals from frontman Steven Tyler, and an all-around emotional sonic landscape that you’d expect from any great power ballad. Seriously, you’re going to want to listen to the opening of the song over and over again. The 80’s rock music scene was obsessed with keyboards, and in this song, the band used the instrument to synthesize violin music. Continue reading
The Beer List: Hell or High Watermelon
This week on The Beer List, I’ll be introducing you to Hell or High Watermelon, by San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery. Once upon a time, the American government deemed that rampant alcohol consumption had caused the country to lose its morals, so in its infinite wisdom, it outlawed booze altogether. In an appropriate nod to that dark period in our nation’s history, 21st Amendment Brewery named itself after the glorious Constitutional Amendment that repealed the ill-conceived act we know as “Prohibition”. Continue reading
Funko Friday: Silent Bob
This week’s edition of Funko Friday will honor the fictional local hero known as Silent Bob. Played with stoic charm by Red Bank-native Kevin Smith, whose 1994 black-and-white classic Clerks, along with its ensuing cinematic universe that took New Jersey by storm, Silent Bob is a lovable, chain-smoking, drug-dealing character who says nothing for the majority of each of the films in which he stars, until he finally opens his mouth to say something that crucially impacts the story. He plays a counterbalance to his hetero-life-mate Jay (Jay Mewes), who is a delightfully crude and misogynistic idiot who never shuts up. Continue reading
Don’t Make Me Adult Today
In honor of the rash of “don’t make me adult today” memes and Facebook status updates that have flooded my various newsfeeds, and to which I relate all too well, I have been inspired to explore in writing the major headaches and minor inconveniences that all fall under the vast and oppressive umbrella called “responsibility.” This sincere plea, which is a daily one for many, myself included, is uttered when the myriad things you have to do and deal with unfortunately take precedence over catching up on Ray Donovan. Although it is asked of an invisible decision-maker who will never actually answer, we all ask it each day, when our alarm clocks go off, again as our moods deteriorate precipitously on the way to work, and once more when bills are due, and on into infinity. The anxiety starts small, with trying not to get food on your clothes when you’re out to eat, and then goes off the charts, with things like trying to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life, as if there’s one correct answer.
Essential Power Ballads, Vol. 4
Welcome to the fourth installment of my guide to essential power ballads!
Journey– “Faithfully”
Let’s just all agree that there has never been a voice out there quite like that of Steve Perry…except for that of Journey’s current lead singer, Arnel Pineda, who sounds EXACTLY LIKE HIM. Anyway, this beautiful power ballad slowly builds to a big finale as Perry ponders his life as a touring musician, but makes a vow of faithfulness to his significant other. Undoubtedly my favorite Journey song. Continue reading
