This week on Funko Friday, I honor one of my favorite Pop! dolls modeled after the title character from one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, The Rocketeer! The 1991 Disney classic features Billy Campbell as Cliff, an up-and-coming pilot who gets his hands on a prototype of a jetpack after being shot down in his plane and uses it to battle the Nazis in 1930’s Hollywood. All in a day’s work for Cliff, as he goes head-to-head with Neville Sinclair, a famous actor who is in league with the German baddies (played by Timothy Dalton, who is always a great villain), and tries to save his girlfriend and aspiring actress Jenny Blake (the lovely Jennifer Connelly) who often gets caught in the crossfire. The cast is rounded out by Alan Arkin and Paul Sorvino. This action-adventure flick is a delightful underdog tale that ends with a battle royale between Cliff and Sinclair aboard a zeppelin! I caught the end of the movie on TV the other day, and it inspired me to showcase the vinyl collectible that Funko faithfully designed.
The Pop! doll created by Funko for the character features Cliff in his old-fashioned bomber jacket, with his custom helmet and mask, gloves and pistol. Around the back, you can see his trusty jetpack that helps him soar above Hollywood, knock out Sinclair and his henchmen, and save the girl. I love the amount of detail Funko puts into these figures, most of which are less than four inches tall. As soon as I discovered this release from Funko, I grabbed it, remembering how much I loved this movie when I was younger. If you haven’t seen The Rocketeer, you should really change that, as soon as you’re done reading this.
Funko Friday will roll on next week, with another spotlight on a selection from my ever-growing collection of Pop! dolls(I currently have somewhere in the neighborhood of 80). Don’t forget to check out the rest of this weekly series under The Toy Chest on my site, as well as my other entries on movies, music, beer, food, and much more. The No Seatbelt Blog is updated several times every week!
