Wings Over NJ: The Chicken or the Egg

5166

Foodies, rejoice! In honor of my abiding love of chicken wings, I am starting a new series here at The No Seatbelt Blog that will present some of my favorite places in New Jersey to eat a plateful of saucy, crispy morsels of joy. Get your wet wipes ready because it’s time to get messy. Continue reading

Mini Movie Reviews: Jason Bourne

jasonbourne-poster1

Jason Bourne is back. It’s been nearly a decade since Matt Damon played the title role in this incredible thriller series, and it’s more than safe to say he hasn’t lost his touch. Damon takes up the mantle again in Jason Bourne, as his character, a former assassin for the U.S. government lives on the run while the secretive government agency that made him what he was tries to bring him back in, or better yet, kill him. This time, he finds out some more than unpleasant news about who was involved with the program that in the name of patriotism transformed him into a killing machine. That revelation hits entirely too close to home, if you’re picking up what I’m putting down.  Continue reading

For Unlawful Carnal Composition: Danger Danger- “Naughty Naughty”

danger-danger-5217283a49a51

This week on “For Unlawful Carnal Composition” we’re reaching back to the rock ‘n’ roll excess of the late 80’s for another song about getting down and dirty. The musical landscape of the time was rife with tunes like this, as abundant sex was secondary only to rocking out for the long-haired guys in rock bands. Taking the spotlight on this edition of my music series on songs about sex is Queens, New York-based Danger Danger and their raunchy hit “Naughty Naughty” (their other biggest hit was “Bang Bang,” I’m sure you can see what’s going on here with the nomenclature). The Beer List: Bluejacket Rheinhard De Vos Sour Brett Red

20160728_190723

“The Beer List” is back at The No Seatbelt Blog after taking a backseat for a week in the name of Ecto Cooler. This time, we’re getting sour again with a review on Bluejacket’s Rheinhard De Vos Sour Brett Red, which was graciously bestowed upon my wife Jenn and I as a wedding gift from my cousin Jen back in April. As you may know if you keep up with my weekly beer series, I’m a big fan of sour beers, and I’m very excited to share with you my thoughts on another brew that’s perfect for the summer season. Mini Movie Reviews: The Secret Life of Pets

the-secret-life-of-pets-56378a2078351

I have a soft spot for adorable animated movies, so I was excited about The Secret Life of Pets from the moment I first saw the trailer. What better way to hook an audience than with a trailer that makes pet owners of all kinds shake with laughter and nod in agreement when they see pixelated depictions of the shenanigans (albeit greatly exaggerated ones) in which they imagine their non-human companions participate when those pets are left to their own devices. Pets is the story of Max (voiced by comedian Louis C.K.), a loyal pup whose world is turned upside down when his dog-loving owner brings home a large and graceless mongrel, with whom he is forced to share their Manhattan flat. Mini Movie Reviews: London Has Fallen

Welcome to the first edition of “Mini Movie Reviews” at The No Seatbelt Blog! I love movies more than most things in life, and when I write about them, I tend to be longwinded. I’m starting this series to present small, digestible reviews of movies that I enjoyed, but on which I don’t feel the need to compose a novel. I’m kicking the series off with London Has Fallen, the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, which was one of two 2013 flicks that revolved around a terrorist attack on The White House (the other being White House Down). The Return of Ecto Cooler

20160723_085316

The confluence of popular demand and fandom can be an inscrutably powerful thing. When two such forces come together, the decision-makers act, and the loyal get what they want. Anybody who grew up in the 1990’s and was even remotely nerdy remembers drinking and loving Ecto Cooler, the Ghostbusters-themed citrus drink made by the juice company Hi-C. The green-colored mixture of water and high-fructose corn syrup came in those ever-so-convenient juice boxes that you could throw in your lunch box, as well as in those large, not-so-convenient cans , the tops of which you had to puncture with one of those old-timey can openers.  Continue reading

A Very Ghostbusters Christmas

20160722_204710

Back in the fall of 2011, Dan Aykroyd, Dr. Raymond Stanz himself, came to the Sam’s Club in Freehold, New Jersey to promote Crystal Head, his new vodka line. I knew of the promotion shortly before it was to occur, but alas, I was stuck going to work that fateful Sunday. To get a chance to meet Dan Aykroyd would have been a dream come true, and looking back, I’m surprised I didn’t fake some sort of violent illness in order to call out of work. Ultimately, I resigned myself to my miserable retail duties. Continue reading
